MIT Media Lab - Epstein Funding Investigation
Report on the MIT Media Lab's acceptance of donations from Jeffrey Epstein and the subsequent resignation of director Joi Ito.
Document Content
An investigation by Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker revealed that MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito had accepted approximately $1.7 million from Jeffrey Epstein for the lab and an additional $1.2 million for Ito's own investment funds — all after Epstein's 2008 conviction. Internal emails showed that MIT officials deliberately concealed Epstein's name as a donor, listing the donations as anonymous. Ito resigned on September 7, 2019. MIT president L. Rafael Reif also acknowledged Epstein had donated $800,000 to other MIT programs. The revelations led to broader scrutiny of Epstein's philanthropic network.
